The Difference Between High Flow and High Speed in 3D Printing

You've upgraded your HotEnd or nozzle. You've seen the data sheet. It says 60% more volumetric flow. So why isn't your Benchy printing in half the time?

You're not alone in wondering this, it's one of the most common queries we get from the 3D printing community. The short answer: high flow and high speed aren't the same thing. They're related, but they're not interchangeable. Let us explain.


What Does "High Flow" Actually Mean?

Volumetric flow rate is the amount of filament your HotEnd can push through the nozzle per second and it’s measured in mm³/s. When we say our HotEnds and nozzles deliver over 60% more volumetric flow, we mean that they can extrude significantly more melted filament in the same amount of time compared to a stock setup.

This is made possible by our unique internal geometry. Where a standard nozzle has a single-channel bore, our high flow products use a four-channel design that dramatically improves heat transfer through the filament. More surface area means better heat transfer so the filament can reach melt temperature quicker. This in turn means more material, printing more reliably, at higher rates and in many cases, faster print times. 


Scenarios Where High Flow Knocks It Out Of The Park

Large, bulky prints with lots of continuous infill are where you'll see the biggest gains. Think boxes, structural enclosures, large terrain pieces. Anything where the nozzle spends long stretches moving in continuous lines (top tip: try cubic!) and the flow rate is the genuine constraint. 

Vase mode prints are another sweet spot because there are no retractions, continuous walls and minimal direction changes. The motion system operates around its top speed and it’s the HotEnd’s job to keep up.

"Ludicrous" and "Sport" speed modes on your printer also become far more reliable with a high flow HotEnd/nozzle. At those speeds, the stock option can struggle to keep filament fully melted, leading to under-extrusion, a significant drop in print quality, and in the worst cases, total print failures. Our high flow variants handle it consistently.


Where You Might Not See Much Difference

Smaller, detailed models often won't print any faster, regardless of what HotEnd/nozzle you're running. Your slicer enforces a minimum layer time to allow each layer to cool before the next one starts. No matter how fast your HotEnd can push filament, the printer will slow down or pause to honour that cooling time.

Prints with lots of bridges, overhangs, or fine detail hit this limit constantly. The bottleneck isn't your HotEnd/nozzle; it's physics.



The Reason Higher Flow Doesn’t Always Equate to Faster Prints

So far, we’ve established where you may or may not see a difference in print speed so now you may be wondering why there’s this discrepancy? Your printer's nozzle movement is governed by three parameters: Speed, Acceleration, and Jerk (how quickly the nozzle can navigate a sharp corner without coming to a complete stop). Every machine has hard limits on all three, and they all interact.

What this means in practice is that even if your HotEnd could theoretically push filament at twice the rate, the printer's motion system may not be able to move fast enough to keep up. On most standard print profiles, the motion system - not the HotEnd - is already the bottleneck. Upgrading your HotEnd or nozzle doesn't remove that bottleneck unless you also update your slicer profiles.

To actually leverage the increased flow rate, you need to:

  • Increase your print speeds in the filament profile
  • Raise the maximum volumetric flow setting in your slicer
  • Potentially increase layer height or line width

Without those changes, you're essentially driving a faster car at the same speed limit.

There are a couple of other limitations to your printer that quash the full effects of our high flow technology - the force of your extruder and the rate at which your fan can cool your parts. In short, if your extruder can’t churn out filament like the clappers and your fan doesn’t cool the melted plastic of your parts down quick enough for the next layer to land and stick, you’ll end up with some very sad-looking and slow-going prints.

Companies like Prusa and Bambu Lab have had tonnes of practice creating printers and slicers that work at the touch of a button to produce nice prints, but E3D have spent years focusing our efforts on the extrusion piece of the puzzle. What it boils (or rather, melts) down to is that the nozzle defines your printing experience. Essentially, we’ve made the tech that has the potential to boost print speeds and now we’re working with OEMs to come up with ways to reduce other blockers to speed.

 

The Other Benefits of High Flow HotEnds/Nozzles That Nobody Talks About Enough

When people see “High Flow” they automatically think of “High Speed”, but there are several other benefits to upgrading to high flow that have nothing to do with print times.
 
Because the 4-channel internal geometry ensures more uniform melting, filament exits the nozzle at a more consistent temperature and viscosity. The result:

  • Better layer adhesion - the bond between layers is typically 3x stronger and more consistent, which matters enormously for functional parts
  • Smoother outer walls - fewer surface artefacts because extrusion is far more consistent 

 

The Bottom Line

A high flow HotEnd/nozzle doesn't automatically make every single print faster but it raises your ceiling whilst also improving your floor. With the right profile tweaks, large prints and continuous extrusion scenarios can see real time savings. And even without touching your speed settings, you get more consistent extrusion, better layer bonding, and higher-quality output.

Think of it less as a "go faster" upgrade and more as a "print better, with the option to go faster when it counts" upgrade.
